Team O'Carroll

In November of 2024 Mike O'Carroll, was diagnosed with ALS. While this is a community of people we never asked to be a part of, ALS United Greater Chicago has been a wonderfully supportive community. They provide services that have, and will continue to, benefit Mike and our whole family. This is why we've decided to walk in support of the organization! Please read on for a little more info.

If you do not know about ALS, it stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease. It robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.

ALS United Greater Chicago provides meaningful support to families in Illinois. In 2024, support from donors translated to:
  • 600+ clinic visits from individuals living with ALS
  • 725+ care plan visits to assess home safety, next steps, and more
  • 640+ attendees connecting via support groups
  • 408+ educated in important ALS-related topics through Living Well with ALS webinars
  • 111 caregivers educated through our Caregiver Boot Camp program

Thank you for your support of our family and ALS United Greater Chicago!
