The day after completing my first Chicago Marathon in 2018, my dad told me that I shouldn't make this a one-time thing. That I should keep running because, as Uncle Danny Allen was experiencing, we never know when our ability to do physical activity would be taken away from us.  That message has stuck with me, and I think about Danny every time I go for a run.

As many of you know, and some of you do not, my Uncle Danny was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in late 2016. In December of 2018, naively thinking that we would have more time together over the next few years, Sarah and I traveled with 9-month old Hugo to visit Danny and Mary Lou over Channukah (pictures below). While Danny was in a motorized scooter and needed assistance with eating, his ability to communicate with us was strong and present. It was a lovely trip and one that I will remember forever. Less than two weeks later, Danny passed away and I was back in New Jersey for his funeral. Danny was a special person - both to me personally and to the world writ large - and our son Roey is named for him. As I shared at Roey's bris - Uncle Danny showed us the importance of family, and that showing up in order to create meaningful memories and build enduring bonds mattered immensely. He worked hard to create a better world, and at the root of his work was his belief in the value of relationships. He seemingly knew everyone, and conversely everyone seemed to know him.

Being blessed with the continuing ability to run and the ability to raise money, I'm running the 2025 Chicago Marathon with TeamALS to raise funds and awareness to help fight back against this terrible disease, both in honor of Danny's life, and in his memory. ALS United Greater Chicago provides much needed patient services resources, funds global, cutting-edge research, and much more in order to help those living with ALS.  ALS is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure. TeamALS is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to support those affected by ALS and to spread awareness of the urgency of our cause and to push for treatments and a cure. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.

Challenging ALS is important to me. To bring hope. To raise awareness. To provide resources and services to families. And to honor Danny's memory. I'm asking for your help - if you are so inclined, please consider a donation big or small to this cause - https://secure.alsunitedchicago.org/goto/Avi-Allen. My goal is $3,000, and I am confident that with your help I can reach that goal. Danny's memory, and your support, will help to keep me motivated and power me through the finish line.

With endless thanks and appreciation,
Avi
