Help me fight ALS!
I'm honored be part of the Team Challenge ALS for the Chicago Marathon!
In March 2020, my grandma, Carol Krentz, died from complications due to ALS. It was hard to see her life change from active and involved grandparent, to watching and unable to participate.
We especially saw this in big moments where she couldn't attend her grandkids' wedding or hold her great-grandchildren.
When training for a past half marathon, I was told to have a motivational word to think of when my body gets tired. My word immediately became "family". I've been finding strength from not only my kids, husband, sisters and parents, but my grandma. My grandma, whose body wouldn't allow her to continue living the life she loved. Who, the last time I saw her alive, told me to live my life while I was young. I took this to heart and began running more competitively to take care of my body and my mind.
________________________
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
