Running a marathon is hard, living with ALS is harder.
I'm Gretchen, and my husband was diagnosed with ALS in 2019. We were both in our 30s at the time, and I don't believe anything has changed our lives as dramatically as that has. The first thing he lost his ability to do was play guitar, and the disease progressed from there.
My brother Calvin and I are running the marathon to raise money for research to find treatment and a cure to this horrible disease that my husband cannot fight. I know that it's a challenge, but I truly believe that if he can make it through every day, we can run this marathon.
I wrote those first two paragraphs for my fundraising page back in 2022 for my first marathon. While all of those words continue to ring true, the hard and undeniable difference is that when I wrote that, Scott was still alive. He was there to support me for the first 5 months of my training, however we both knew he would never cheer for me while I ran the race or see how much money we raised to fight ALS.
I miss him, and think about him every day. I don't love running, but I love him, and am thankful for each and every one of you that donates to help fight ALS.
