In 2020, my Dad was diagnosed with ALS.  We were estranged for 8 years and took the opportunity to forgive and reconnect. While we healed our relationship, my Dad’s body deteriorated. ALS is a cruel disease, and it was excruciating to watch my father lose his ability to move, speak, and breathe.

Without ALS, however, I do not think we would have reunited. I don’t believe either of us would have found the courage to forgive. I owe so much of who I am to my dad. In many ways ALS was a gift. It saved me and my dad. For that, I will always be grateful. ALS also made me realize how lucky I am to be able to move and speak. I’m an attorney and actor. My body and voice are everything. I do not want to take them for granted.

I miss my Dad. It was a privilege to be with him and share in his final days on this earth. While ALS brought me and my Dad together, I would not wish this disease on anyone.  I am running the 2024 Chicago Marathon to raise money for ALS United Greater Chicago, which raises money for ALS research and to support individuals with ALS and their families. Please donate! Any contribution is welcome.

Running for love.
Running because I can.
Running to stop ALS.
